Thinking of trekking across New Zealand? Here’s some tips and advice on what to bring, ensuring your adventure is safe, enjoyable and well equipped.
I’m sure you’ll probably think of way more, but here’s a list of the essential items you can’t forget to bring when exploring the beautiful land of New Zealand.
Number 1.
A map! This probably sounds really really obvious, but funnily enough this can be a common item left behind. Quite often, most explorers will rely solemnly on the markings and directions already displayed across a particular route. However, what if markings had been tampered or worn? Always have a backup map, you really don’t want to be getting lost out there do you!
Number 2.
A compass. I imagine you will already be on the ball with this one, but if you hadn’t thought about purchasing one, I’d definitely recommend it. For accurate positioning, you can’t go wrong without having a compass. Combined with your map, you’ll have that peace of mind, knowing you’re walking in the right direction!
Number 3.
First aid kit. This is definitely a given, don’t even consider beginning your adventure without one. Clearly, accidents happen, although not expected and so if the unfortunate was to occur, you need to have a kit ready at all times. Being out in the middle of nowhere without the supplies and bandages, etc could lead to infections or worse…make sure you have the right supplies and medication to prevent ruining your trip all together.
Number 4.
Flashlight. A NECCESSITY! Trust me, late night explorations through the dark will be proven extremely difficult, not to mention dangerous without a source of light. Not that you’ll be trekking through the night, I’m predominantly referring to times spent searching around your tent and campsite. LED flashlights are highly beneficial and don’t forget to stock up on batteries too.
Number 5.
Lighter and Matches. Campfires will be proven very difficult without! Of course, all you smokers will already be equipped, but for the non-smokers, be sure to pack plenty of both.
Number 6.
Wet wipes. Likewise with the first aid section above, wet wipes will prove highly worthwhile when things get grubby on the trek. When it comes to eating during breaks, you want to have clean hands right? Keep clean and tidy by being well equipped with wet wipes, you may find use in cleaning other bits of equipment too…
Number 7.
Comfortable footwear. Clearly you’ll be spending most of your time in appropriate walking/climbing/trekking footwear, however when it comes to unwinding at night, don’t forget a comfortable pair of trainers, or whatever else you’d normally rock around the living room!
Number 8.
Relevant climbing gear such as trekking poles, footwear, jackets and safety clothing. All of this type of stuff will help reduce pressure afflicted against your body when on the move. Might sound obvious, but reduce these unnecessary flaws by suiting up appropriately. Crossing obstacles such as rivers and rocky areas will be proven easier with the right equipment.
I’ve listed just the obvious necessities when trekking through New Zealand, or any other adventure holiday for that matter. However, here’s a brief list of further recommendations that you should also bare in mind:
- A GPS receiver
- Extra food and water
- Extra warm clothing
- Appropriate rain gear
- Sunglasses and suncream
- A knife or some sort of multipurpose tool
- A whistle (be heard!)
- Insect repellent
- Treating for water (not all water will be drinkable, make sure you have something to treat it with)
Anything I might have missed, feel free to reply in the comments section below. I hope you find this of use when trekking through New Zealand.
